Tips for choosing an office cleaning company

August 2015

Whether you're looking to partner with an outside office cleaning company for the first time or are deciding if you should renew your current office cleaning contract, we have identified the critical success factors in choosing an office cleaning company.

Variety of services – It’s beneficial to find a business that can cater for all your cleaning and facility services needs. Typically a commercial cleaning company will offer office cleaning, floor cleaning, window cleaning, commercial cleaning, industrial cleaning and facility services. This will reduce your number of suppliers and you won’t need to hire specialists for each duty.
Flexibility of services - Choose a cleaning company that will work with you to establish a plan that accommodates your budget and can provide a tailored services based on your office cleaning requirements.
References - Your cleaning company should be able to provide you with references from its clients. Contact these references and ask how happy they are with the cleaning services that the company provides. Alternatively check for online reviews.
Emergency Requests - Is the cleaning company available for an emergency request such as special visitors to the workplace or if an employee is sick in the office. A great cleaning company will go out of their way to facilitate their clients.
Experience & Training - An experienced cleaning company will have developed structured cleaning systems and will be comfortable handling any cleaning issues involved. Office cleaners should receive ongoing training so find out how often they receive training, who trains them and if they receive certification for the training.
Certifications - Ask for a list of all certifications related to your cleaning companies business. Have they carried out adequate health and safety training such as specialist cleaning processes for hazardous environments, Safe Pass, working at heights, manual handling, mobile scaffold and tower training?
Insurance - Ensure any commercial cleaning company you consider is fully insured and bonded for the safety and security of you, your company and your facility.
Performance Review - How will the cleaning company measure and report on their success? How can you provide feedback? Is there a formal complaint procedure?
Green cleaning - Find out what green cleaning products, processes, and certifications the cleaning company has, and whether they can help your company become more environmentally friendly.
Account Manager - Make sure to meet your account manager. Is there a procedure in place for replacing cleaning personnel who aren’t a fit for your facility. You could ask how the cleaning company screens its employees pre-hiring and how it trains them post-hiring.
