Tips For Keeping Your Desk Clean & Decluttered

How would you rate the tidiness and cleanliness of your desk?! Is your desk clean, organised and clutter free or is it messy, dusty and in need of a good clear-out?!

When you feel inspired or motivated, you don’t want to be searching for space to set down your important work or fighting back the flood of stuff on your desk.

So how can you keep your desk clean, organized and productive?!

1. Create a physical inbox –for incoming papers and work to be done. Aim to clear a realistic percentage of this inbox every week. Review the inbox regularly and delegate work that you are not getting time to carry out.
2. Have an area for documents that need to be binned. This is particularly important where you have a shared bin. Gather unrequired paper and bin at regular intervals throughout the day.
3. Reduce the amount of paper on your desk – Don’t print unless necessary, unsubscribe from needless postal mailings and reduce the number of paper reports and memos.
4. Eliminate unnecessary clutter – Do you use all the office accessories on your desk? Unless you have a purpose for items on your desk remove them! It doesn’t have to be totally sterile but if it’s not being used move it off your desk.
5. Clean your desk regularly – If you spend a few moments every day tidying your desk you will save yourself spending hours tidying it up if not done regularly.
6. Never leave wrappers on your desk – Whether it is a piece of paper or a food wrapper, get in the habit of holding it in your hand until you can put it in the bin. The same applies with unfinished drinks, that half-empty cup of tea or can of coke is an accident waiting to happen.
7. Take a Picture – Do you have items on your desk that are simply for reference? A battery or ink cartridge that you need to replace? Or a clipping or article? Instead of leaving these items on your desk, either scan the clipping or take a photo of the reference code. Save these to your computer so you can access them when required.
8. If in Doubt, Throw It Out – Believe it or not you will never need 99% of the papers that you are saving. If you really need a hard copy, ensure to file it correctly so you can find it when you need it.
9. Scan It– Scan documents into soft copy or PDF. Most photocopiers have a scanning facility which makes it easy to scan as many documents as you need.
10. Clean before you go home – ask yourself if your boss walks past your desk after you leave, would you be proud of what he or she would see? Clean your desk before you leave as it brings closure to your work day and sets you up for a clean start tomorrow.
